In 2024, Halcyon Dive Systems proudly supported Expedition Buteng, a multidisciplinary mission led by Rannvá Jørmundsson and Maria Bollerup of Nixie Expeditions in Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. The project brought together cave divers, scientists, and local communities to study and protect the Laulawi Aquifer, now officially recognized as the longest underwater cave system in Southeast Asia, with more than 5.2 kilometers explored and mapped.
The team conducted extensive biodiversity, hydrological, and geological research, collecting samples to better understand the ecosystem and its conservation needs. Their work also reached beyond science; through community outreach in Lasongko Village, they raised awareness of the aquifer’s significance and supported efforts toward a potential UNESCO Geopark designation for Muna Island.
The expedition brought together an international team of 28 members, including divers, scientists, and cultural researchers from eight countries. Their collaboration showcased what’s possible when exploration, science, and local engagement work hand in hand.
Beyond the data, Expedition Buteng stands out for its spirit of collaboration, curiosity, and respect for local culture, values that deeply resonate with Halcyon’s philosophy of exploration and environmental stewardship.
Below are a few highlights from this remarkable journey.
